'Online learning' is an emerging technology in the field of learning and teaching. It has totally changed the age old teaching-learning scenario. 'Classrooms' have become bigger, spreading all over the world. A teacher has become a virtual e-tutor. A computer has replaced the physical presence of teacher. Different terminologies have evolved. Lot of research has been taking place in the field of online learnig. What do you think we, being the future instructional designers and virtual teachers should remember? What do you think are the different facets of online learning?

This wave of Online learning which has spread all over the globe has definitely made world a small place! This is a trmendous leap taken in in the field of education and me being an aspiring instructional designer am proud of it!
As online learning is gaining popularity all over the world, we, as the backstage workers in this scenario need to be even more careful in terms of the content delivered to the learners. As in F2F situation, the teacher does have control over the content and can bring back on track the thoughts of the learners, which to some extent is a task in online learning. The content has to be specific without any ambguity, effective, non-offensice and ofcourse easy to understand.
It goes without saying that just preparing the dish is not enough, how you serve it adds value to the food too, similarly, the way content is presented is very vital i.e. the strategies used have to be appropriate and should right on the target!

Go to this site for a very interesting research report on ‘Do gender and learning style play a role in how online learning course should be designed’. This research has been done by Diana Garland and Barbara N. Martin from Missouri State University. The researchers found that gender was a factor in the relationship between learning style and student engagement. they have also implied that learnig styles and gender of all students must be considered. go on to this pdf and read an intersting study. this is a documentation of 'The nature and characteristics of online learning in Illinois colleges and universities'. this gives us quite a comprehensive insight in the charactristics of online courses conducted in Illinois Virtual Campus.

Online Learning! is highly effective believe me, Its was a great experience doing various courses online compared to face to face classroom sessions.
The learning scenario has indeed changed from what it was even 4 years ago till this new year. Every day in this feild has seen a change.
The most wonderful boon that techno;ogy has given to education is online learning scenario.
i agree that on line learning has lot of potential as it breaks the barriers of time , place, sex, class. But i i do not agree that it has "changed the age old scenaripo'.i feel that on kine learning can supplement,complement traditional learning but not substitute it I think it is still a far away possibility wherein A computer can replace the physical presence of teacherin all aspects of learning.E learning or on line learning is a welcome step toward globalisation of education
We being the future instructional designers and e-tutors should remember that we will have to work more towards bridging the distance gap by putting more efforts to create virtual bonds with learners, make learning more interesting and include a great deal of interaction. The learners who select this medium of learning are self motivated and providing the correct direction to the path that leads them to what they have expected to achieve would help attain the objectives.
